Economic development and environmental sustainability are two of our areas of focus. As a community economically dependent on agriculture, we want to do everything we can to mitigate the damaging impacts of climate change on our fruit industry. Reducing food waste in landfills has been identified as THE most impactful and immediate action we can take to reduce the harmful impacts of climate change. Food waste in landfills generates large amounts of methane, which traps 80 times more heat than CO2. Single-use plastic is clogging our waters and decimating marine life, drastically reducing the ocean’s ability to sequester carbon from the atmosphere.
Please join us to help Apple Blossom Youth Day attendees get their waste separated into the right containers at stations located throughout Memorial Park on April 30th. Shifts are 2 hours in length.
The Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce and Waste Loop teamed up to offer this service at Oktoberfest this past fall, and the Chamber has graciously agreed to lend us their collection stations for Youth Day. Recycled materials will be recovered by Waste Management and compostables will be recovered by Winton Manufacturing for their commercial composting facility.
